CNC Mold Positive: Proposal

For this project, I wanted to avoid vessel-like figures that I have experienced before. And after the instructor showed an example of a figurine of a person, I thought I could do something like that.

< Origianal Shape Before Breaking, Restoration Drawing>          <SuMakSae, in today's shape>

I originally thought of making one of the 'SuMakSae' that is famous for its generous smile and distinctive shape it got from breaking. I had a few concerning points about that idea; I wasn't sure whether I could express its tough surface, coming from its ingredient, rock. I also worried that since it is a relief that has organic lines and broken cuts, I can express enough with Rhino. I thought even though I could do it, it would take quite a long time. After talking to the class, my instructor showed me some tools and programs I can use, and at the same time, they suggested advanced thought on my shape instead of just making a replica.

While I was considering different approaches, I saw this cup and thought maybe I could make a dish version of SuMakSae, decorative, that has relief at the bottom like that cup.

This is the rough drawing of what it should look like. I can build a whole piece and split it into two pieces, following the yellow dotted line in the photo above. I want it to be 2 inches deep and about 8 inches wide.

The side of the dish would be straight up like the dishes in the photo above.

I also think of building a restored version of SuMakSae and splitting them into today's broken shape and the rest of the face, making them a set that fits like puzzle pieces.

Next step would be building this shape in Rhino.
