Week 2 : Pattern Research


These are the examples of the pattern research. I could recognize few features of the pattern:
1. The negative/positive use of the space, 
2. Unity of the pattern when repeated, 
3. Expansion in 4 or often 8 ways of the shape, 
4. Or having symmetrical pattern
5. And doesn't follow non of the rules above



6. Or, come in unique but repeatable shape.

 

Not only using positive and negative space, patterns often involve interesting line works.

ALGORITHMIC SURFACE MODELLING + ANIMATION

  This week, we are assigned to use algorithmic surface modeling, using surface morph, brep, divide domain square and extra. Process While finding tile examples, I found this peacock feather pattern and built line work based on it. And I made a brep, using a star shape with 16 lines, that are rounded. I used "loft" to make shape, and gave a bit of twist.  And found out that my surface morph is not happy with something. So, I tried to give bit of volume to my line work, and couldn't satisfy it. I tried to fix problems, now my divide domain square was not happy either. I thought maybe it is because of the twisted shape and made another brep, with no twist, and finally it was happy. I came back to the surface morph's problem and check what is bothering it. It seemed that my  reference line work being flat is causing the problem. Project 2: Reverse Engineered Object (Week 1: Select)

 The second project we'll be working on is to reverse engineered object. To provide more information about the engineered object, it is a mechanical object that is complex or multiple parts and inherently made up of several components and assembled. Additionally, it should contain moving parts that interact with each other. This week, I will select few items and take a look at their parts and decide whether they are adequate for this project. After selecting an object among them, I will measure this object as precise as possible using caliper and re-build this each part of this object as 3D file using Rhino and eventually assemble them into a holistic piece. In this post, I am taking a closer look to figure out the objects I chose will be adequate for this project. I selected 3 items that are a ball point pen, a stapler, and a circle cutter. MILESTONE PROJECT 1: Stacked Slices Model

 For this week's project, I thought with the slices, I can probably make cylinder type light shade. Below are the inspirations. The second, fourth and fifth one shows somewhat continuous changes on each pieces, so I thought I can make a extruded surface (think of something like a carpet, with uneven surface) and let its one side serve as outside and the other side as inside of the figure, slice it and place it along the base shape of the cylinder.   I was drawing a free line, which will be the starting point of the uneven side of the surface. However, the line I drew really didn't reflect the shape I am imagining, so, I looked up some videos again.
